1. The rate of exchange between the Victorian and CNA pound is approximately 2.5 to 1. Given the lower prices in Victoria, an annual income of three hundred pounds is just enough to support a working-class standard of living. Three hundred pounds a year would be considered rock-bottom for Victorian whites, but out of reach for three quarters of the black population.
