4. In the Bloody Eighties, roughly 50,000 French and 65,000 Germans, Austrians and Italians settled in Ireland during the 1880s. While most of these refugees later migrated to the CNA and Mexico once those countries reopened those borders, many stayed on: Professionals were scarce, and wages correspondingly high.
