Though absent the potato famine Ireland wasn't as terribly depopulated as IOW, the same pressures for emigration applied; indeed, with the relatively greater prosperity of North America and the much greater prosperity of Mexico, the pull factors were accentuated. As IOW, first usage then actual knowledge of the Irish Gaelic language declined among the Irish as the English language became increasingly important for the upwardly-mobile and increasingly ambitious Irish peasantry.
