8. Benedict Arnold (1741-1780?) was among the most successful Patriot commanders of the doomed Rebellion, as LaDuke describes. After Saratoga/Albany he was one of the leading promoters of the Walk, writing the tract Toward a New Jerusalem mentioned in Sobel's bibliography. (Posthumously reprinted in Jefferson, it became something of a sacred text there.) Arnold led the first Wilderness Walk, into what is now Southern Vandalia, and presumably shared that expedition's unknown but tragic fate.
