1. Matt Alderman named this vignette "Watered With the Blood of Patriots" and it is listed in the archive as "Washed With the Blood of Patriots". The reference is clearly to Jefferson's sentence in a letter to William Smith on IOW 13 November 1787:

The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots & tyrants.

Of course this quote does not exist in the FANTL, being referenced only in the title. With Matt's concurrence, we have retitled the vignette to match Jefferson's word choice (rather than the alternative, which shows up in various unsourced quotes attributed to Jefferson). (DAMB)

On the other hand, it's just the sort of sentiment you would expect Jefferson to come up with in the Apologia Sobel mentions him writing (from prison in London, presumably) on p. 184. (JP)
