Albert Burley

Albert Burley of California.

Albert Burley was a member of the Mexican Senate from California in the 1820s. A member of the Liberty Party, during the 1827 Mexican elections Burley accused President Andrew Jackson of the Continentalist Party with taking ten percent of all federal revenue for his private use, a charge he later withdrew. Jackson chose not to retaliate against Burley for his unfounded accusation, which gave Jackson a (possibly undeserved) reputation for being tolerant of dissent. Sobel notes that, according to Malcolm Brayback, Jackson's last words on his deathbed were, "My only regret is not having choked Burley and Folger to death. It would have given me great pleasure."
