Edwin Corbitt

Edwin Corbitt.

Edwin Corbitt was a delegate to the Lafayette Convention of 1793. Corbitt was born too late to take part in the North American Rebellion or the Wilderness Walk. He emigrated to Jefferson as a young man after the settlement had already been established for several years. Corbitt was one of a handful of young delegates to the Convention who opposed the Constitution of 1793 for being too undemocratic. Sobel says that Corbitt and the other young delegates spoke of democracy "in an almost anarchistic fashion." It is likely that Corbitt was a founding member of the Liberty Party in the late 1790s.
