John Runk of the Southern Confederation.

John Runk of Georgia was a Liberal member of the Grand Council from the Southern Confederation in the 1870s. At the Liberal Party's 1878 nominating convention, Runk's good looks, eloquence, and generally reformist record made him a contender as the party's nominee for Governor-General. However, Runk was a protégé of John Calhoun, and the delegates feared that this would cost him votes among black North Americans. In the end, the convention nominated Councilman John McDowell of Manitoba, who went on to lead the Liberals to a 62 seat plurality in the 1878 Grand Council elections.
