Martin Washington

Colonel Martin Washington in battle.

Martin Washington was a North American military leader during the Rocky Mountain War of 1845 - 1855.

Colonel Washington was commander of the Fifth Alabama Regiment of Horse, a cavalry unit in the Southern Confederation militia. Sobel implies, but does not directly state, that Washington and his men were former Negro slaves who had been manumitted by the Lloyd Bill of 1840.

Washington's regiment was part of a North American army that crossed the Mississippi River from Port Ashly, Georgia to Jefferson in April 1846. Although Washington's regiment managed to break through the Jeffersonian lines, the Jeffersonians were able to drive the North Americans back across the Mississippi after two weeks of bitter fighting.
