The Students Defense League was an anti-isolationist student organization that rose to prominence during the era of the Starkist terror. The S.D.L. had its headquarters at Georgia University in the Georgia province of the Southern Confederation. Following the Mexican conquest of Alaska in 1898, the S.D.L. claimed to have over 100,000 members, all of whom were dedicated to "the defense of our land from its enemies, both internal and external." Sobel reports that by "internal enemies" the S.D.L. meant Governor-General Ezra Gallivan, who they claimed "works either together with or for foreign powers who would destroy our nation." The leader of the S.D.L., Frank Mitchell, called for Gallivan's removal from office "by whatever means necessary."
Sobel's source for the Students Defense League is Allen Watterson's The Great Fear: Starkism in the C.N.A. (London, 1956).
