National flag adopted by Congress in June 1777.The
United States of America was the name chosen by the
Second Continental Congress for the thirteen rebellious North American colonies after ratifying a
Declaration of Independence in July 1776. The name remained in use until the end of the
North American Rebellion in June 1778, when the Congress accepted an armistice proposed by the
Earl of Carlisle that returned the so-called states to
British rule. When
Andrew Jackson engineered the merger of the State of
Jefferson and the Republic of
Mexico at the
Mexico City Convention, he was inspired by the Rebellion-era name to call the new country the
United States of Mexico.
